My name is Gianna Kordatzky. I am the wife of one handsome husband, the mom of four creative kids ages 5-10, and one of the co-founders of Family Fun Twin Cities.
Thanks, Nicki, for inviting us into your online world! I’m so thrilled to be here on MinneMama Adventures chatting with you about something that both you and I love.
We are going to talk books!
I love books. The smell of printed books, new and ancient. The sound of binding, new binding stretching open and old binding cracking glue. The feel of the cover, the fresh gloss on a new cover and the softly aged cover worn down with love.
In our house, books are respected. If there is nothing else I want my kids to learn growing up, I want them to treat books with care.
Each age and stage learns that completely differently. Toddlers express their love by ripping out and drawing on pages. Preschoolers insist on reading and re-reading and re-reading their favorite stories. Early elementary-aged children first learn to read their favorite books by memorizing them. As our kids get older, they fall asleep with their books in their beds.
Some of my favorite things to do around the Twin Cities include attending author events at Red Balloon Bookshop or Wild Rumpus. Even our local libraries have author events.
We are so blessed to live in a thriving, literature-celebrating community. It’s great fun to meet authors who are so humble and interesting. But I know that’s not possible for everyone. I know that many people can’t get out of the house easily or are working parents who can’t just drop everything at work to do that.
That’s why we have developed a new program at Family Fun Twin Cities. A virtual picture book club called BookHounds.
What is a BookHound?
It’s similar to a Book Detective. Detectives investigate and look for answers. As BookHounds, we discover how we can enjoy picture books and understand them better.
BookHounds
Launching Friday, April 1
10:00 am on Periscope App
Follow @FamilyFunTC
At each meeting, we discuss all things books focusing on primarily on local and regional authors though we will not exclude any great books.
And to top it all off, we will have bonus episodes with local picture book authors. Most BookHounds meetings will be a half hour give or take. When we meet with authors, though, I can’t make any promises.
Are you wondering how you get to be a part of BookHounds?
- First, I need you to download the periscope app on your phone or device. If you want to be a part of the live discussions, you need to be on periscope.
- Second, I need you to search for @FamilyFunTC and follow us. Then, you will be notified when our shows go live. We will not see you on screen, but you need the app to be able to make comments and ask questions.
- Third, if you are unable to watch us live, you can find our replays on http://katch.me/familyfuntc or go to the BookHounds Tab on Family Fun Twin Cities.
You are welcome to join us! We would love to have you there.
