MN STATE FAIR | AUGUST 21-SEPTEMBER 1, 2014
There are very few activities on earth that I look forward to as much as the Minnesota State Fair. No really, it can only be topped by my kid’s birthday parties, sun-centric vacations, the Academy Awards, and Christmas. This week, I got a taste of that Christmas Eve fever when I attended a State Fair sneak peek event with my blogger buddies to get a sampling of new foods and see first-hand some of the fresh, imaginative exhibits. So, donning an empty stomach and a waist-free dress (What? It’s more discreet than my Thanksgiving sweats!), I excitedly dug right in.
In this blog post, I am giving away two admissions to the Minnesota State Fair PLUS two tickets to the Grandstand show, A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor, on Friday, August 29 at 7:45pm. These tickets were awarded to me at no cost at the MN blogger event I attended. Details for entry are at the bottom of this post. UDATE: CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR GIVEAWAY WINNER: LINDSEY S.
Here is a quick breakdown of my three personal food faves making their inaugural debut in a couple short weeks.
Deep Fried Lobster-on-a-Stick
Canadian lobster in a deep fried corn batter with a spiced dipping sauce sounds unpleasant to a non-lobster lover like myself. Did I try it? Yes. Did it quickly become my favorite food on the planet? Yes. Maybe I should practice what I preach to my kids and try new foods more often. This stuff is a can’t-miss!
Find it at LuLu’s Public House located next to Schilling Amphitheater at the West End Market.
Pizza Tots
Take a meat pizza, throw some hash browns on top, then roll it up into a ball and deep fry it. There you have it! Pizza tots (although the Green Mill has done this in a much more professional and delicious manner). The combination of sausage, pepperoni, mozzarella cheese, hash browns, seasonings and a marinara side earns this one a very worthy spot in your stomach on an otherwise overcrowded day.
Find them at Green Mill located west of the Family Fair Stage in Baldwin Park.
PB&J French Toast
I have always been a firm believer in “Martha’s-Cookies-first-followed-by-MouthTrap-cheese-curds,” but I think the Robbinsdale OES Dining Hall may have swayed my tradition a different direction. This dish is simply peanut butter and jelly on Texas toast dipped in french toast batter and served with syrup, but holy heavenly sweetness – it’s incredible! It will be my breakfast on fair day. Then I shall spend the next 360+ days trying to perfect the art of making it at home because it’s JUST. THAT. GOOD.
Find it at Robbinsdale OES Dining Hall located on Underwood St. next to FAN Central.
While we can all probably agree I’m not a “foodie” blogger – though I did very much enjoy sampling those drool-worthy masterpieces – I was very excited to get to the portion of the event regarding family-friendly activities. Of course, there are the classic kid activities (Kidway, Adventure Park, carnival games, the animal barns), but here are some additional ideas that could make for a good time.
Discounts: August 25 and September 1 are “Kids Days” where ages 5-12 get in for only $8.
Sky Ride: My kid’s favorite thing to do all day is the Sky Ride. It’s not the cheapest mode of transportation around the fair ($4 one way; $6 round trip), but the POV from your seat flying high above the crowds really can’t be beat.
Butterfly House: It’s not free, but it IS pretty unique. For $3/person, you can walk around this netted building with hundreds of butterflies. They land on your clothes, fingers and head, so make sure your kids aren’t bug-phobic…and bring your camera.
Horse Barn: EquiMania in the Horse Barn is ideal for every kid who has an interest in the veterinarian field, or who has ever wanted to own a pony. Full-size skeletons, dental tools, and tail-braiding, plus some education on rider safety and careers, are offered at EquiMania.
Little Farm Hands: One of my favorite free activities for little kids (ages 2-10) is Little Farm Hands on Machinery Hill. Wee farmers use their imagination to help with farm chores, collect eggs, harvest crops, milk cows and ride tractors.
Alphabet Forest: Alphabet Forest is fun area for letter-learners and new readers. Daily in Baldwin Park, meet authors, create and capture words for photo opps, and play alphabet and spelling games.
STEM Day at the Fair: Bring your science, tech, engineering or math genius to the fair August 21 for STEM Day, where they can help design rocket parts, zoo exhibits, or futuristic cities and explore pollution, light travel, and robots through hands-on, interactive activities. Sounds way over the head of this art major, but more power to all the little smarty pants out there!
Haunted Mansion: Located directly inside Gate 7, this mansion is the perfect place to take your teen. Seriously, for $4, you can just sit back and watch them try to keep their cool while getting scared out of their minds!
The Giant Slide: Just do it. $2 for a guaranteed smile.
Regular admission to the fair ranges from $11-13 (but discounted tickets can be purchased from Cub Foods), but other than the cost of food, you can have a relatively cheap day if you decide to go that route. Here are some fun, frugaltastic ideas.
Parking: Jump on the bandwagon and take a Park and Ride bus to the fairgrounds. 50% of fairgoers use metro transit and it really couldn’t be any easier. Click here to figure out your mode of transportation.
Mobile App: The State Fair App costs nothing and is intuitive to use. Makes for a nice way to flag all your favorites before heading out the door so you can make sure you don’t miss a thing! Download: ANDROID MARKET or iPHONE APP STORE
Watch the Talent Show: I’ve found this to be one of my highlights over the years. Every night of the fair, Minnesotans of all skill levels compete in the Leinie Lodge Talent Show at 6pm. The finale is Sunday night, August 31 in the Grandstand, and it’s free and amazing! We are one talented state.
Laugh at Lumberjacks: The thrice-daily Lumberjack Show is a comedic blend of adventurism, athleticism and education. Located at the North Woods Stage.
NEW! Visit the Common Table: In the Agriculture/Horticulture building stands a brand new, creative exhibit called The Common Table. It’s a beautiful walk-through display meant to help answer the question, “What is a sustainable, community-based food system, and how do we create one?” While in the Ag/Hort building, create seeded Crop Art and check out The Dirt.
Extreme Canine Stunt Dog Show: Watch a free, live show where a dozen rescue pups (some available for adoption) show off their skills as the human entertainers create an interactive audience experience using frisbees, juggling, and just plain ol’ comedy.
The Bee Beard: Join the Fair beekeeper for a live Bee Beard demonstration, taking place August 27 at 1pm. when 10,000 honeybees gather around some poor sucker’s neck and chin, creating a literal beard of bees. I’ll watch from behind the screen, but kids eat this demonstration up!
Giant Sandbox: Kids can dig, scoop, pour and burrow their toes in a sandbox made just for them. Located east of the Family Fair Stage in Baldwin Park.
Stay for the Fireworks: If your kiddos have it in ’em, stick around for the nightly fireworks display, usually between 10-11pm, weather permitting.
On my drive out of the fairgrounds that day, I passed Martha’s Cookies, the Homemade French Fry stand and the River Raft Ride. Just as I have felt every year come mid-August, I became abnormally pumped to take my children on our annual tradition. There are TONS of adventures to find with your kids at the State Fair. Though the idea of lugging a stroller through the busy grounds may seem daunting, I promise you…the memories will be worth it.
Drumroll please… it’s GIVEAWAY TIME!
Enjoy a full day at the fair with TWO admission passes and TWO tickets to A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor at the Grandstand on Friday, August 29 at 7:45pm. To enter to win this ticket package, simply comment below with YOUR FAVORITE FAMILY-FRIENDLY FOOD or ACTIVITY at the MN State Fair.
Contest ends Sunday, August 17 at 8pm CST.

08/13/2014 at 10:12 amWell, I just moved here this summer so this will be my first time at the MN state fair! I do know that my neighbor runs alphabet forest, an area devoted to reading activities for children. This seems like a great project that I’m excited to see!

08/13/2014 at 10:23 amSeeing the animals is our favorite. Saw a cow in person for the first time last year, I had no idea they could be so big!
Laura B.
08/13/2014 at 10:28 amThe fair is always so bittersweet…sad that the summer is ending, but such a fun way to celebrate! We love the Miracle of Birth barn, and all of the family-friendly music that the fair offers. Does anybody know if the Mr. Bubble bubble area will ever come back? We missed it two years ago and I didn’t see it there last year, but heard it was a great time for little ones. Maybe it was a one-time thing?

08/13/2014 at 11:18 amMy FAVORITE food at the fair is……(drum roll) Bacon on a stick! With a bucket of fries from the french fry booth and its just heaven.
My favorite activity? Okay, this is just silly, but bear with me. I like to put a single mini donut in the , mouth of the wooden boy statue that stands near the giant slide. I’ve been doing it for years. He has an ‘OH’ expression, making his mouth a perfect circle that a mini donut fits in perfectly. Its hilarious looking. And makes me happy. Apparently I’m still 10.

08/13/2014 at 11:26 amSince this is going to be my first MN state fair I am looking for forward to everything. The PB&J French Toast looks amazing

Nicki
08/13/2014 at 9:30 pmDoes an egg allergy mean you have to avoid the deep fried stuff? If so, pizza is a great choice! I’ve gotten it there a time or two.
Julie
08/13/2014 at 1:00 pmWe loooove the sky ride, and you’re right, being up so high can bring any kiddo a smile to their face! Oh and last year we were huge fans of the salami and pickle on a stick… I think I have three every year!

08/14/2014 at 8:15 amWhile this isn’t necessarily “fun”, I love the air conditioned family building with bathrooms, changing stations and private nursing rooms. I think its right by the grandstand. It’s an amazing resource for families.
Nicki
08/14/2014 at 2:48 pmGreat tip, Angela. I know 107.1 also has something called a “Lactation Station” for nursing mothers. And, heck yes, A/C is considered “fun” if it’s over 90 degrees outside 🙂

08/14/2014 at 9:00 amMy daughter has a genetic disease and cannot eat anything with protein, but the state fair is one place where food is not a problem with her. Our favorite traditions since she was old enough to enjoy the fair are: great, big, state fair pickle on a stick; garlic fries; fresh cut fruit; Rice Kristie’s; corn on the cob; and that folks, is all our tummies can handle! Then, we are on to watch everything free; try everything free; smile, laugh, and make more memories.
Nicki
08/14/2014 at 2:49 pmI’m dying to know…what are Rice Kristies?? If they are anything like actual RK treats, I am adding them to my (already-way-too-long) list of must-eats.

08/14/2014 at 4:19 pmMy young friend and I like to ride on anything that moves through or above the fair. Our favorite thing to do is to ride the skyride, the tram or the cars that go above crowds (sorry, can’t remember what they are called) during the day, then we do it all again when it gets dark. It’s worth it, just to see the smile on his face. The view is fine any time of day.

08/14/2014 at 4:29 pmYe old log ride and the birthing barn! Fried food of any shape or substance!

08/14/2014 at 4:32 pmI cannot wait to take my 2 year old daughter down the slide and this year (and see all the animals…she is currently into cows lol). Food wise, I am WAY excited for the fried buckeyes (peanut butter balls coated in chocolate, dipped in funnel cake batter, fried, coated in powdered sugar, and served with strawberry dipping sauce). I will also obviously eat fried pickles and some of the breaded spinach artichoke ravioli from the Vescio’s booth (St Louis Park represent!) 😀

08/14/2014 at 9:43 pmGreat post and awesome giveaway! I’m a big fan of all things 4-H, although I have to say the county fairs have some great 4-H barns, too. I’m a blogger as well — I write Dating Dementia, midlife stuff, Alzheimer’s, caregiving, etc. Wonderful to connect with another blogger!

We have taken our 2 boys to the fair since they were two and my Freshman, college bound son is coming home after his first week of classes because in his words “I can’t miss the State Fair, it is our tradition to go as a family every year. I am not missing it!”

08/15/2014 at 8:24 amI grew up going to the fair every year with my parents and siblings and now our own children look forward to this event all year long! We spend 3-4 days there with grandparents and cousins and it’s still not enough! The kids are 5 and 7 and already in love with it! Their favorites are tasting honey and riding the sky ride and space needle with grandpa!

08/15/2014 at 10:26 amWe were a 4-H family (in the city!) so we loved exploring every part of the fair the days we were there for judging. The State Fair Talent Show was the highlight of each evening…partly because we were more than ready to sit down and test for awhile…. We, of course, snacked during the show.

08/17/2014 at 12:49 pmWell, it might not be an activity that the ENTIRE family would participate in, but the MyTalk 107 “Lactation Station” is a MUST for nursing moms. Gliding chairs and diaper changing stations in an air conditioned tent? Ummm, yes please! It makes taking babies to the fair so much easier.

08/19/2014 at 9:47 pmBeing new to Minnesota, I haven’t experienced a whole lot at the fair. The last two times I attended, I was a performer at The Creperie. They gave us free crepes and they were AMAZING. We also went on the giant slide both years. We got monetary tips when we perform and blow it all at the fair, trying exotic and strange food.

08/06/2015 at 8:30 pmI grew up in WI but my husband is from South Carolina. He looks forward to the State Fair as much as I do even though he doesn’t have all the memories. I remember riding a camel at the MN state fair when I was a kid. We cannot leave the fair without having the corn on the cob sinfully dipped in the vault of butter, and of course the cheese curds, and the fresh dairy shake – so simple but so good. The addition of the pet area is great. Having the option to take the bus to and from makes the fair so much more accessible to everyone, young and old. May the tradition live on forever!
Miranda
08/19/2015 at 7:26 pmWe love to go look at the animals the most. This year I am hoping to bring a friend who has never been to the state fair so that I can show him all the things that I love. And our favorite food is always the cookies though it’s not weird trust me I love the fried stuff but those cookies we buy every year no fail.
